about

Kotekan Records is excited to Re-issue Matthew Welch's album of bagpipe versions of selected Anthony Braxton solo musics! Matthew worked closely with Anthony on adapting his improvisationally-drivien solo saxophone repertoire for the bagpipe, with radiant results!

From the 2000 release:

Multi-instrumentalist/composer Matthew Welch is representative of a new generation of creative musicians who are exploring and advancing the cause of trans-idiomatic global creativity. Mr. Welch is a virtuoso Bagpipe instrumentalist, accordionist and saxophonist of originality. As a composer, his works draw on the composite spectrum of Earth creativity - from post-Feldman methodologies through John Cage and beyond. His catalogue of completed works range from solo music to extended large ensemble musics, with real originality and purpose. Mr. Welch will undoubtedly be one of the artists whose work will affect the shape of third millennium creative music and I thank him for his decision to do this project. - Anthony Braxton, 2000

Admiring the intimacy of solo music, I first came to know of Anthony Braxton through his solo saxophone compositions, so naturally my first work in documenting the great composer's work would be in a solo setting. One of the many beauties of this music is that the language types within these compositions can be extended beyond any particular instrumental factors; "Trans-idiomatic," as Anthony has coined. Recorded here is my negotiation of his mutable compositional material in my most intimate space, solo bagpipes, placing the music in another context while simultaneously remaining faithful to the room the music presents for choice and invention. I would like to thank Anthony Braxton for his direction in this project (this music has challenged me to grow), and for his priceless guidance and advice in creative music and in life. - Matthew Welch, 2000
