I first met Matthew Welch on June 22, 2005. It was a fortuitous meeting to say the least, as he quickly became one of my closest and most trusted friends. Our work as an improvisational duo started shortly thereafter and has continued to evolve in the last decade as part of an ongoing conversation that takes place with both music and words, a deepening friendship that has been hugely impactful in my life. A central point of our friendship has always been our shared reverence for the artists who have influenced us. Ornette Coleman, Morton Feldman, John Zorn and Giacinto Scelsi are among the many masters who have helped shape our shared sound world and perspective. It is a great honor to pay tribute to these giants of the 20th century through music, friendship and love. - Jeremiah

I met Jeremiah after in my second month working at John Zorn’s The Stone. We became instant friends and immediately started playing music together. We have played together in a lot of configurations but have always noticed an instant musical rapport as close as our friendship – I love this guy like a brother and I have learned a great deal about playing and creating music when improvising or hanging with Jeremiah. It is in collaboration with him that I have learned much about both my saxophone and playing creatively with a rigorous dedication to both formal focus and being scintillatingly spontaneous. We had a love for many of the same musicians, covering the whole range of sensibilities and musical styles, which informed both of our playing. We shared an interest in Tibetan Buddhism, which shaped much of our deep talks in words or dialogues in performance. I’m overjoyed that our great friendship and age-cured musical chemistry has finally been documented in our first album! This recording certainly represents the finest moments of our collaboration over a decade in the making. With the 7 dieties of the 7 days of the Bardo (Tibetan world of the dead) escorting them, we dedicate our music to our inspiring musical heroes and those we’ve lost recently. Thank you Jeremiah for all the shared love and music, so happy to present this music on Kotekan. - Matthew
